SEASON PREMIERE: Too bad this Showtime political documentary series had to return on such a slow news week for Beltway intrigue… midway through a presidential impeachment Senate hearing.

My, my, my, this series is getting really, really good – and the rise of Cynthia Erivo as Holly Gibney, an investigator with OCD severe enough to think of her as a female Monk, is a strong part of it. And tonight’s episode is called “Que Viene El Coco,” the name of a Goya painting about a fabled shapeshifter that haunts and hunts naughty children… Hmmm. Sound pertinent?

SEASON FINALE: This is the Season 10 finale for this series… which may have gone on a season or two too long, but still contains some impressive and entertaining ensemble acting.

I was a bit let down by the script for last week’s series premiere, but not by the central comic performances by Hugh Laurie and Josh Gad. And Armando Iannucci, creator of Veep, certainly deserves his chance to let this new universe of characters build and meld. So stick around, and stay aboard, and see what you think.

Last week’s Season 10 premiere of Curb was a closely guarded secret – which preserved all the jokes, but didn’t give other critics and me a chance to rave about how brilliantly funny it was. Now we know, and the secret’s out: Larry David, after 20 years as “TV Larry,” not only hasn’t lost a step. He’s hit full stride…

The impeachment hearings have an earlier start than usual today, because presiding U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts doesn’t have any court-related business on weekend mornings. So at 10 a.m. ET, all the president’s lawyers take to the well of the Senate to argue their side of the case, and attack the other side.

If you saw last week’s premiere episode, on Australia, you know how stupendous this latest BBC series, presented by Sir David Attenborough, is. Regardless, tune in tonight. This second installment takes on the continent of North America – so it’s got the added appeal of being a home-court game.

Forty-plus years of covering television have yielded countless close encounters with stars of the first magnitude. Many are now deceased, but their bodies of work still breathe...
