Contemptible men abound in J.K. Rowling’s “first novel for adults.” As for the only one who isn’t, well . . . he’s soon dead. The Casual Vacancy, a three-hour HBO miniseries is a decidedly bleak affair with a modicum of redemption...

Dancing with the Stars has gone 20 cycles of dance competitions now. That’s 10 years of competition, and of prime-time TV success – and tonight, ABC celebrates that success with a one-hour special that brings back some of the prior winners and contestants for a program filled with vintage clips and brand-new routines.

The focus here is on the spring of 1970 – specifically, events leading to and culminating in the day in May when the national guard was called to Kent State University – and ended up firing upon, and killing, four college students. Check local listings.

In tonight’s episode, Coulson (Clark Gregg) goes to yet another former adversary in hopes of forging an alliance. This time it’s another former S.H.I.E.L.D. boss, played by Edward James Olmos – who, Coulson argues, shares the same goal of shutting down H.Y.D.R.A., the evil organization that infiltrated and all but destroyed S.H.I.E.L.D.

This Oscar-nominated documentary by Rory Kennedy revisits the fall of Saigon in April 1975, when President Richard Nixon called for a total withdrawal of forces. Those old enough to recall that era will, no doubt, have images seared in their brains of the last helicopter leaving the American embassy. What this documentary contains, however, is formerly unseen footage – lots of it – taken on the ship where that helicopter, and other last-ditch escape vehicles, were bound. Check local

At the end of last week’s episode, the suave-looking serial killer known as the Ogre (recurring guest star Milo Ventimiglia from Heroes) revealed his secret S&M and torture room to Barbara (Erin Richards), who reacted to the discovery with a slight but nonetheless surprising smile. This week, his knife is at her throat – but is it a deadly threat aimed at punishing her beloved Jim Gordon, or something more consensual?

Jane (Gina Rodriguez) and her nemesis Petra (Yael Grobglas) have been wrestling with each other all season – but only figuratively. Tonight, in one of this series’ typically (and delightfully) over-the-top plot twists, they make it literal.

HBO has been on an amazing roll of late with its original documentaries, led by Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst. But this new one, by Nick Broomfield, attacks another cold case less successfully, by focusing on the former and current residents of South Central Los Angeles, neighbors of Lonnie Franklin, imprisoned in 2010 on counts of multiple mass murder. Was he the “Grim Sleeper” who killed dozens of local women? This nonfiction film asks the question, and looks for answer

Last year, Dick Cavett’s Watergate dove into the veteran talk-show host’s program archives to explain and explore that Seventies flash point from a surprisingly rich and varied selection of perspectives. Tonight, he does the same thing with another incendiary subject of the era: the Vietnam War. And once again, he proves that, many decades ago, he presided over a talk show that on occasion, talked about subjects of utmost seriousness.  Check local listings.
