Ryan Gosling is riding high right now as the male star of La La Land, singing and dancing with onscreen partner Emma Stone. Right before making that movie, though, he partnered with another charismatic screen actor for a film set in Los Angeles, in the 2016 buddy comedy action movie The Nice Guys, opposite Russell Crowe. It may seem like an odd pairing – but in this lighthearted period mystery movie about an apparent murder in the porn industry, their comic chemistry works just fine.

This is the cable premiere of the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones – four women who, each in her own time, burst out of the ultra-competitive Saturday Night Live pack to grab the spotlight. McCarthy did it as guest host, the other three as regulars, but the gang’s all here in this distaff take on the ectoplasmic comedy franchise launched in 1984, starring Bill Murray.

Tune in early for tonight’s TCM showing of this 1992 Robert Altman film, because you don’t want to miss the lengthy, involved opening tracking shot. It’s one of many, many inside jokes served up to film buffs in this very knowing satire of Hollywood. Tim Robbins plays a studio executive who keeps getting threatening notes from a writer whose work he’s rejected. The cast includes Greta Scacchi, Fred Ward, Whoopi Goldberg, Peter Gallagher, and so, so many great cameos, star

This isn’t the current CMT series. It’s the 1975 movie – another Robert Altman film, and one of his very best. The music is wonderful. The performances – by Lily Tomlin, Karen Black, Keith Carradine, Henry Gibson, Renee Blakley and others – are exceptional. Altman’s direction is inspired. And the story, as it delves into the political arena, might be even more disturbing today than it was when this film was released four decades ago.

SERIES PREMIERE: The Z in the title of this new Amazon series stands for Zelda, as in Zelda Fitzgerald, the famously unstable but spirited wife of writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. The rest of the title, The Beginning of Everything, refers to the author’s assessment of her importance to his life. When she entered it, he wrote, her entrance was… “the beginning of everything.” In this series, Zelda is played by Christina Ricci, who gets the coquette-ishness down just fine. David

All day and all night, TCM salutes Debbie Reynolds with a very generous sampling of her film career. The keystone arrives at 6 p.m. ET, with 1952’s Singin’ in the Rain (pictured), but also look, at 8 p.m. ET, for 1964’s The Unsinkable Molly Brown.
