SERIES PREMIERE: Karen Gillan, a former
Doctor Who companion who was utterly charming on that series, takes center stage here as a modern Eliza Doolittle – only instead of being cockney and poor, she’s cocky and a boor. She’s also flashily overdressed, like a
fashionista with access to a bottomless closet of free samples, and is obsessed with conducting and reliving her entire life on new media. John Cho co-stars as the marketing executive who teaches her, like a younger and even stiffer Henry Higgins, how to improve herself – and opposed to her selfie image. The leads, and the very topical approach to the
Pygmalion story, make it worth a taste, but it’s unclear how Gillan’s character, actually named Eliza Dooley (subtlety is not this show’s strong suit), can learn little life lessons each week, yet be so totally
Clueless overall that the show’s basic premise still applies. For other opinions on this new series, and others, check out our
