Stepping Up the Tensions
April 18, 2017  | By Eric Gould

The annual North Korean military parade is always a spectacle, and generally no joking matter to watch. And it’s a safe bet that it was a worldwide audience this year since expectations about hardware sophisticated enough to reach neighboring countries and the United States were more or less confirmed, depending on the viewpoint of the military observer being asked. (There were plenty of details and new equipment to support the claims.) Whether the North Koreans are a threat or not, it’s obvious in this 8-minute clip they’re using television to their advantage, at least making the point that they excel at synchronized high-step marching, have extra large hat styles and the most enthusiastic announcers. —Eric Gould
