One hundred years to the day after the U.S. declared war on Germany, President Donald Trump authorized the firing of cruise missiles at Syria, in retribution of the apparent deployment of chemical weapons by Syria against its own people. It was a marked, and remarkable, about-face for the current administration, and a military follow-through of a type that former President Barack Obama failed to get Congress to authorize. Trump pulled the trigger without seeking authorization – and probably enhanced his reputation and poll numbers markedly as a result.
