SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
April 15, 2017  | By David Bianculli  | 3 comments

NBC, 11:29 p.m. ET

Saturday Night Live has been around since 1975, but has never before attempted what it’s trying to do tonight. It’s performing the show twice – once for the East Coast, and again, hours later, for the West Coast. Executive producer Lorne Michaels pulled this off successfully before, but that was with Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin, when doing a special live episode of NBC’s prime-time sitcom 30 Rock. For tonight’s “double feature” of SNL, Michaels reaches out to another SNL old hand as guest host: Jimmy Fallon. The musical guest, also performing his set twice, is Harry Styles.

I meant at 8:30 here in LA on the West Coast. (No option to go back and edit.)

This is not my understanding of how it's going to work.

They're doing the show live, as always, at 11:30 in NY on the East Coast-- and just broadcasting it simultaneously to all time zones (it'll be on here in LA on the East Coast at 8:30 tonight).

Then at 11:30 here on the West Coast they're air the show again as a repeat... which is how it's been for 42 years.

Took 'em that long to get ready for prime time, eh? (Though I wish more of the current cast was ready for SNL no matter what time it airs.)
