And now for something completely different: a mental acuity test. Who said the following? "It’s a little bit like, you watch somebody sell their used car and not wash it. You can spend $10 washing the car and get another $200 for the car..."

The Television Critics Association's biannual get-togethers have been going on for more than 30 years now. That’s longer than Gunsmoke was on the air, longer even than Law & Order, in all its guises...

I come neither to praise Jon Stewart nor to bury him. Many have done the former, and Fox News seems only too happy to do the latter...

What do The Americans, Louie, Sons of Anarchy, The Shield and Justified all have in common, other than that they all aired, and in some cases still do, on FX? They have never won an Emmy. Further, they have not even been nominated...

Talent comes in different shapes and sizes. And guises. That’s hardly news, of course, but it explains a lot about how, even after 10 seasons, America’s Got Talent is still doing boffo biz in the summer ratings...

Expectations carry a heavy burden. Just ask M. Night Shyamalan. His name featured prominently in network previews for Wayward Pines so it was only natural that early reviews focused on the idea of a once mighty feature filmmaker trying his hand on the small screen...

Alex Strachan

Alex Strachan has written extensively about television since 1995. He was the staff television critic for The Vancouver Sun from June 1995 to 2003. Prior to that, he was a general-assignment reporter and sportswriter at the Sun, which he originally joined in 1979. He became the national TV critic for Canada’s Postmedia News chain, or Canwest Global Communications as it was then called, in September 2003. He wrote for the chain from 2003-15, during which time his stories appeared regularly on Canada.com and in such daily papers as the National Post, Vancouver Sun, Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Citizen and Calgary Herald. In recent years, his writing has focused more on media analysis and industry trends than celebrity profiles and background features, but he still finds time to watch The Voice and The Amazing Race, not to mention guilty pleasures like Banshee and Amazon Hotel. Check out Alex's TV website, The Televisionary, for reviews, in-depth interviews, and opinion pieces. Also,  Alex's personal website focuses on his concern for the world around us through his stunning photographs from his world travels. In addition, check out Alex's blog on his site which he tries to update every two days or so. You can also follow Alex @astrachanideas
