If you were in a mental hospital, wouldn't you be happy to find Hugh Laurie's Dr. House as a fellow patient? The guy's funny, he's smart, he's an anarchist, he's guaranteed thrills. Also painful insults, but hey, you can't have everything...

Ricky Gervais is now a comedy cottage industry, but he was nobody back in 2001 when he co-created and starred in the original British version of The Office. Find out why he's been hot stuff ever since, as the show gets another go...

If there's one thing I really hate, it's reading a TV blog entry I wish I'd written. And if there's one thing I really, really hate, it's reading one of those every day. Too bad for me...

So Ellen DeGeneres is replacing Paula Abdul on American Idol. I don't get it. Do we really want to hear jokes while contenders' performances are being assessed? Or are producers thinking Ellen will bring warm-and-cuddly support?...

Could it be that the lowest of the low has actually hit rock bottom? Britain's hit Big Brother "reality" franchise is being dropped by Channel 4 next year after a 10-year run. It's part of a "creative overhaul"...

Bernard Herrmann is the man to thank for those Psycho shower scene strings. And the spooky rumble under Citizen Kane. For Taxi Driver's moody Manhattan vibe. And Vertigo's dizzy delirium. Now Herrmann gets a suitable salute...

Who needs Good Morning America and The Tonight Show? Celebs can always hype their stuff on The Weather Channel. Seriously...

Diane Werts

Associate Editor
Diane Werts has been glued to the tube since she can remember, growing up in a household where the TV came on first thing in the morning and stayed on till bedtime and beyond. She worked for the USA Film Festival, then for The Dallas Morning News writing about everything from Shakespeare to macrame art to rock music (and has the hearing loss to prove it). She moved to New York's Newsday to edit their glossy TV magazine, then returned to writing about television, specializing in its stranger permutations. She's a past president of the Television Critics Association.
