What a series this is turning out to be. LeBron James and his Los Angeles Lakers took the first two games of this year’s NBA Finals easily, winning the first game by nearly 20 points and the second game by a margin of 10. But then, in Game 3, the Miami Heat rebounded with a double-digit win of its own – and the teams traded wins in Games 4 and 5. James played spectacularly in Game 5, yet wasn’t quite enough to match the play of the Heat – specifically, Jimmy Butler, whose Finals duel with James is becoming a heavyweight battle for the ages. Points per game average through the first five Finals games? Butler 29, James 30.2. Rebounds per game? Butler 8.6, the larger James 11.4. Assists per game? Butler 10.2, James 8.2 (a figure that would be higher had James’ teammates completed more of his pass plays). And get this – shooting percentage for the Finals so far? Butler 55.5 percent, James 57.3 percent. Amazing. And tonight is Game 6, with the Lakers ahead 3-2.

Somehow, during the pandemic, The Circus and its correspondents manage to travel just enough, and to just enough of the right people and places, to give us an inside view of politics as this presidential campaign keeps on veering in unexpected directions. And what a week this was, with the president hospitalized, and his doctors being much less than forthcoming regarding key details of his test results for COVID-19, whether positive or negative. Will this new edition of The Circus cover, and lend new insight to, that particular series of events? I’m positive. But not pandemically – in that regard, so far as I know, I proudly remain negative.

Tonight’s second installment of this very entertaining documentary about the groundbreaking Los Angeles comedy club includes reminiscences from lots of comics, from Tim Allen (who tells of how a horrid booking at a sales convention inspired his eventual “tool time” routine) and Bill Burr (pictured) – who just hosted Saturday Night Live last night.
