The Detroit Tigers swept the New York Yankees to get here with ease, and well-rested. The San Francisco Giants had to come back from a two-game deficit to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 7 to win their pennant, so the two teams have gotten to this 2012 World Series by very different paths. But they’re both here – and for game 1, Detroit ace Justin Verlander takes the mound, with Barry Zito pitching for San Francisco.
