BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

CNN, 9:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s installment of The Nineties is titled “New World Order,” and examines all the major political changes that affected the world in that decades. (Boy – I can’t wait, after the new few years are over, to see The Tens.)

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

Last week, Daenerys Targaryen ordered that an invitation be attached to Jon Snow, for him to visit her kingdom and bend a knee. And he’s announced his intention to visit, so these two popular and powerful Game of Thrones figures may meet tonight at last. And that’s not the only new alliance, or confrontation, likely to take place in this week’s episode.

Showtime, 9:00 p.m. ET

The descriptions for each week’s episode of Twin Peaks: The Return have gotten aggressively minimalistic, and recently have been reduced to two or three words. But the two words attached to tonight’s Episode 12 are especially intriguing. The words are “Let’s rock” – and they’re the same words spoken by the Man from Another Place, the dancing little person in the red room of the Black Lodge, as he introduced himself to Dale Cooper back in the original Twin Peaks (pictured). Does that mean we’re going back to the Red Room tonight? With or without any of the many incarnations of Dale Cooper?

PBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

MINISERIES CONCLUSION: This three-part miniseries concludes, with Michael Palin’s Tom finally revealed for what he is. Which, for now, remains this show’s central mystery. Check local listings.

HBO, 11:08 p.m. ET

SERIES RETURN: John Oliver has been on a brief hiatus, but he returns tonight, to wrap up the week’s news events into a half-hour entertainment show. Good thing it was a slow news week, so he’ll have an easy time easing his way back into the swing of things…
