Here is a controversial and moving short film, The Present, that has been around since 2014, but quietly keeps winning awards, reportedly more than 50 after playing at more than 180 international film festivals. The story apparently began as a comic strip by the Portuguese artist Fabio Coala. Director Jacob Frey then made two bad mistakes: He turned the story into a film he used to graduate from a school of animation in Ludwigsburg, Germany, and then screened the film at Cannes. He did both reportedly without giving proper credit to Coala. The controversy has done little to darken the bright popularity of the moving film. -- Jim Davis
