A Sad Surprise
The world lost a big one Sunday with the death of David Bowie, a gifted and chameleonic performer who succeeded in so many realms and left a lasting impression on popular culture, while generally operating out in front of it. Here he is performing “Young Americans," with a seven-piece band (with sax played by David Sanborn) and six back-up singers (including Luther Vandross), 41 years ago on The Dick Cavett Show in one of his more down-to-earth incarnations: White high heels, brown zoot suit complete with dangly watch chain, hair dyed to a shade that would make Donald Trump cry and so perfect it would make a London werewolf green with envy. -- Jonathan Storm
