INDEPENDENT LENS: "THE TRIALS OF MUHAMMAD ALI"
April 14, 2014  | By David Bianculli

PBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

This documentary recounts one of Muhammad Ali’s greatest fights – one that took place outside of the boxing ring. At a time when relatively few Americans had any concept of Muslim beliefs, Ali already had confused or shocked many people by embracing Islam and changing his name from Cassius Clay. Now, as boxing heavyweight champion of the world, he refused military induction during the Vietnam War, insisting it was against his religious beliefs. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court – and even all these decades later, it’s still an inspirational and intense story. Check local listings.
