How time flies, like birds of prey. I find it difficult to believe that a dozen years have passed since the WB presented its short-lived DC Comics Birds of Prey series, presenting Dina Meyer as Barbara Gordon’s Oracle (a grown-up Batgirl), Ashley Scott as The Huntress and Rachel Skarsten as the Black Canary. I also find it difficult to believe that many people remember that series at all, but I generally find it difficult to erase entirely the memory of TV shows about costumed female crimefighters and criminals. (Chalk it up to watching Batman in my formative youth.) But I digress. Tonight on Arrow, the Birds of Prey are united in a new incarnation. There’s no Oracle this time around, though, so series regular Katie Cassidy, as Laurel, fills the void, teaming with the Black Canary to fight The Huntress. (Obviously, if this version of the DC universe is to be faithful to the original, that animosity won’t last long). The Huntress is played by Jessica De Gouw, making her fourth appearance as the renegade costumed character – and the Black Canary, like her alter ego Sara, is played by Caity Lotz (pictured), who has appeared on Arrow for two years now. And yet still, to this point, Laurel doesn’t know that her sister Sara, and the Black Canary, are the same person.

The new Birds of Prey just sucks. Much better the original TV series with Dina Meyer & Ashley Scott
