BETWEEN
May 21, 2015  | By David Bianculli

Netflix, 11:30 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Former Nickelodeon star Jennette McCurdy, from iCarly and Sam & Cat, stars in this new Canadian series, imported by Netflix on a weekly basis, as a pregnant teen who lives in Pretty Lake. It’s an isolated town that becomes even more isolated after a mysterious virus wipes out everyone over 21. The quarantined town has to fend for itself and work as its own new society, as in Lord of the Flies or, in a movie that had anyone over 30 rounded up and forcibly ingested LSD, the 1968 counter-culture movie Wild in the Streets. What’s really wild about this new six-part limited series is that Netflix is premiering each new installment on a weekly basis, and at the same time: Thursdays at 11:30 p.m. ET. This means no instant binge-watching of Between, but it also means more time for the show to generate attention and conversion. I’ve been rooting for Netflix to try this in the States – and here it is. After its Netflix premiere, of course, this opening episode is  available for instant downloading.
