THE NIGHTMARE BEORE CHRISTMAS
October 23, 2014  | By David Bianculli  | 1 comment

ABC Family, 9:30 p.m. ET

Henry Selick, not Tim Burton, directed this 1993 holiday classic, though it’s based on Burton’s story and characters. And the music is from frequent Burton cohort Danny Elfman, who provides more for this film than just the music. Elfman also is the voice of Jack Skellingon, this movie’s creepy-looking star.

It should be pointed out that Danny Elfman only did the _singing_ voice of Jack, and Chris Sarandon did the speaking voice.

Also, we need to start acknowledging that it's the PRODUCERS that make movies, not the directors. While Henry Selick directed this, this is in every way a Tim Burton movie. The producers are the boss on a movie, not the director...unless you're a superstar director and even then they're usually producer and director. That's how Kubrick got away with hundreds of takes...he was also the producer. You think some director of a feature that's hired onto a project would be allowed to do hundreds of takes?

But I dirgress....
