Thursday night is Ghosts Night all this month on TCM, and tonight, one of the movies shown is 1947’s The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, which stars Gene Tierney as a young widow who moves to a seaside cottage and encounters the ghost of its former resident, a New England seafarer played by Rex Harrison. I note this film because, when I was a kid, I had no idea it existed. So when TV came up with a 1968 sitcom called The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, starring Hope Lange and Edward Mulhare, I didn’t know it was a small-screen remake. Of a 21-year-old movie. Gotta love Sixties TV – they’d put on anything that wasn’t topical, just to avoid anything resembling an actual issue or point of view.
