In 2007, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez teamed up for an ambitious, just-for-fun movie named Grindhouse, a double-feature drive-in-style treat that included “Let’s all go to the lobby” ads, coming attractions for movies that didn’t exist, as well as two action mini-movies, Tarantino’s Death Proof and Rodriguez’s Planet Terror. After the joint Grindhouse release, the directors released separate expanded versions of the films under their own titles – and that wasn’t the end of it. One of the faux promos, for an over-the-top action movie called Machete and starring Danny Trejo, was turned by Rodriguez into an actual movie in 2010, featuring Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Don Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez and Lindsay Lohan. Reminds me of the time when a spoof Rolling Stone review of a record that didn’t exist led to the recording and release of what was described as that album, under the name The Masked Marauders. But I digress…
