I REMEMBER MAMA
May 9, 2015  | By David Bianculli

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

This 1948 film is a kind of turn-of-the-century Wonder Years, about an adult looking back on childhood and providing occasional narration and perspective. In this nostalgia fest, it was Barbara Bel Geddes, the future Miss Ellie of Dallas, as Katrin, looking back on her youth as a member of an immigrant Norwegian family living in 1910 San Francisco. Irene Dunne had the title role. This same premise also was spun off as a TV series, the grandmother of all sitcoms, beginning in 1949 and Rosemary Rice as Katrin and Peggy Wood as Mama.
