Meredith Willson’s nostalgic, yet sarcastically modern, Broadway musical was one of the first stage musicals on which I worked at my Glee-like performing arts group back in high school. So for many reasons – including the sight and sound of Paige O’Hara, the future voice of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast animated classic, as Marian Paroo – I have a super-soft spot for this musical. That includes this 1962 production, shown on TCM unedited, uninterrupted and in full wide-screen format – which allows you to see all the dancers in Shirley Jones’ cleverly choreographed “Marian the Librarian” number. Robert Preston stars.
