THE NORMAL HEART
May 25, 2014  | By David Bianculli

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

Larry Kramer adapted his own 1985 play for this new HBO telemovie, which stars Mark Ruffalo as a gay activist at the start of the AIDS crisis, and Julia Roberts as a doctor who’s one of the first physicians to track and examine and warn about the spread of what was eventually identified as the HIV virus. It’s a movie that works very well in its strongest scenes, capturing some excellent performances, including standout ones by supporting player Jim Parsons and costar Matt Bomer (pictured here with Ruffalo). For a full review, see Bianculli’s Blog.
