THE ODD COUPLE
February 19, 2015  | By David Bianculli

CBS, 8:30 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This is a warning, not a recommendation. I really like Matthew Perry, but this new CBS comedy, based on this first episode, may be even more painful for his fans to watch than for anyone else. The show’s producers proudly are ignoring, rather than remaking or adapting, the many years of the Tony Randall-Jack Klugman TV series, and, in tonight’s premise-establishing premiere, use only one joke from Neil Simon’s original play and movie. That isn’t just misguided. It’s stupid. And that one joke, by the way, is the only time I cracked a smile in the entire half hour – though I did wince a lot. Perry plays the sloppy Oscar character, while Thomas Lennon plays the fastidious Felix. For a full review, see Ed Bark’s Uncle Barky’s Bytes.
