OPRAH'S NEXT CHAPTER: LINDSAY LOHAN
August 18, 2013  | By David Bianculli  | 1 comment

OWN, 9:00 p.m. ET

Is this all Oprah Winfrey is doing with her OWN network these days? Scheduling highly publicized installments of Mea Culpa Theater, booking misbehaving celebrities and expecting them to act contrite and beg for redemption? She did it with Lance Armstrong, which got the most media coverage Oprah has gotten since shutting down her syndicated series – and tonight, she’s doing it with Lindsay Lohan. How long before A-Rod makes Oprah’s A-List?

You're absolutely right, David. Oprah has been talked into these types of tabloid interviews by her 'handlers' at Discovery Networks with the curse and temptation of the almighty dollar. Reduce yourself to the lowest common denominator and the hearts and minds viewers with little taste will follow. 10 to 15 years ago networks and cable systems loathed and ridiculed the tabloid press for this type of "gutter" reporting. Now it's standard fare. How we have lowered ourselves to this level with the defense that "it's what people want". How sad. I won't be watching, Oprah. You seem to have resorted to the types of shows you did in the first few years of your terrestrial show. I've seen enough train wrecks.
