PIONEERS OF TELEVISION
April 22, 2014  | By David Bianculli

PBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

This new episode looks at “Doctors and Nurses,” including Dr. Kildare (pictured), and gives screen time to the most groundbreaking entry in that genre, NBC’s St. Elsewhere. But when one of its cast members, Ed Begley, Jr., gives his series credit for being the first to dramatize complex medical procedures in a realistic way, don’t take his word for it. For starters, there’s that Fifties show starring Richard Boone, Medic, that did for doctors what Dragnet did for cops. Check local listings.
