TNT, 10:00 p.m. ET

Eric Gould, in a recent Cold Light Reader column, raved about Gerald McRaney’s acting on last week’s excellent episode of this series. Our own Noel Holston reacted with a comment, agreeing with Eric and wondering exactly when McRaney shifted from the tossaway comedy of Major Dad and Simon & Simon and morphed into one of TV’s best dramatic actors in Deadwood, House of Cards, Justified and elsewhere. Guest star McRaney is reason enough to watch Southland this season – but the way this show has evolved, there are plenty of others.

McRaney also did the "blue skies" detective series "Simon & Simon". Sometimes the "fluff" helps pay the bills, so you can hone your craft and afford to be more choosey in the future with regard to roles. Michael Chiklis is another good example. How many easily dismissed series has he appeared in? He's the sum of his parts, the best of which are "The Shield" and to a lesser degree "Vegas". Sorry "Commish" fans, but THAT particular program had all the charm of a 1970's CBC import... BTW--- All Hail the Evolution of C. Thomas Howell! ;-)

He's great on Southland (forgive that sitcom of his). Too bad Southland's so erratic on schedule.

Ever since SouthLAnd began airing on TNT, it was scheduled on Tuesdays 10/9c. This season it's Wednesdays, same time. Hardly erratic. What's erratic is TNT's pitiful promotion of one of the best shows on TV.
