ONCE UPON A TIME IN WONDERLAND
October 10, 2013  | By David Bianculli

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Sophie Lowe plays Alice in this latest reinvention of the Lewis Carroll original stories and heroine. Alice is grown up now – and, like Dorothy in Return to Oz, is diagnosed with a mental disorder after insisting upon telling tales of visiting a strange land populated by amazing people and creatures. The danger is that this new series, like its parent show Once Upon a Time, will get bogged down by impenetrable subplots and annoying excessive use of Disney fantasy characters. But it’s worth a taste, and not only for Lowe – watch, too, for Emma Rigby (pictured) as the Red Queen. Naveen Andrews, from Lost, plays Jafar, one of the aforementioned Disney force-fed imports.
