Day 1 of this year’s U.S. Open, played for the first time at Washington’s rough-and-tumble Chambers Bay, proved to be a lot of fun – for everyone except Tiger Woods, perhaps. Freight trains drowned out all other sounds, the course was challenging, the contours prompted lots of imaginative shots more akin to miniature golf, and the greens were anything but: their color was less that of rich grass and more that of purple lettuce or a bad bruise, with random splotches of browns, purples and greens. The golf played on these bumpy surfaces, though, was surprisingly good, with many players finishing the first round below par. Today it’s Round 2, starting at noon ET on Fox Sports 1 and switching to the regular Fox network at 8 p.m. ET. For a full story about this tournament, see Gerald Jordan’s Crossing Jordan.
