2020 DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY DEBATE
June 27, 2019  | By David Bianculli

NBC, MSNBC, Telemundo, 9:00 p.m. ET

Last night’s debate had one leader in the current polls, Elizabeth Warren, on the 10-person stage – which allowed enough room for others, including Julian Castro and Amy Klobuchar, to break through. Tonight’s debate, by contrast, is top-heavy, with Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg, all elbowing each other for time and attention. And if those on the other end of the political familiarity spectrum in tonight’s debate are ever to make a dent in the national consciousness (Marianne Williamson, are you listening?), this is the night, and the stage. And tonight, between hours, NBC will be sure to turn off the microphones of the first hour’s moderators. That may be the only certainty as we head into tonight, but that, you can count on.
