John Steinbeck’s 1939 novel about a family hit hard by the Dust Bowl and the Depression had been published only one year when director John Ford turned it into this classic film version, starring Henry Fonda as beleaguered everyman Tom Joad. Jane Darwell, as Ma Joad, will get you, even more than Fonda, which is saying a lot.
