Amazon Prime Video, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Two streaming services are premiering shows today that aim to fill the void left by the departure of HBO’s Game of Thrones. This is Amazon’s attempt – and it stars Orlando Bloom as a police inspector in a period city populated not only by humans like himself, but “Faefolk,” the catch-all description for faeries, fawns and other creatures that, in this world, are anything but imaginary. (The lead Fae is played by Cara Delevingne, pictured here with Bloom.) Some of the people involved in this new series will draw from very passionate fan bases: Not only Bloom from Lord of the Rings as the star, for example, but Guillermo del Toro as one of the writers, and Jon Amiel, from my beloved The Singing Detective Dennis Potter miniseries, as one of the directors. It’s worth sampling – but in its early execution, it’s closer to NBC’s Grimm than Showtime’s Penny Dreadful, and doesn’t quite hit the necessary magical tones. For full reviews, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes and David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower

I actually like this edgier Grimm-ish show. Guts, sex, and a little spoon-feeding of political commentary. I’ll keep watching.
