TAYLOR SWIFT: MISS AMERICANA
January 31, 2020  | By David Bianculli

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

DOCUMENTARY SPECIAL: This new Netflix documentary special is impressively personal, including not only very early home videos and peeks at her teenage diaries, but frank discussion of her eating disorder problems and personal insecurities. “I’m only here because I work hard and I’m nice to people.” And rather than limit the content to onstage and backstage footage, which is on view enough to attest to both her popularity and talent, Miss Americana includes, and talks about, the less positive moments: Kanye West dissing her on stage at the Video Music Awards, red-carpet hosts making snarky comments about her dating life, and so on. She feeds her feelings back into her writing, and this film documents both the process and the results. It all adds up to a promotional boost for her new album – but isn’t that part of the work ethic?
