THE PLOT AGAINST AMERICA
March 16, 2020  | By David Bianculli

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

MINISERIES PREMIERE: David Simon and Ed Gross, who teamed up for The Wire, are back with this HBO miniseries adaptation of Philip Roth’s disturbing novel. Like The Man in the High Castle, it offers an alternative history in the years around WWII – in Roth’s case, a hypothetical exploration of what might have happened had celebrity pilot Charles Lindbergh run for president and beaten FDR, and instituted what were increasingly isolationist and anti-Semitic policies. Stars include John Turturro and Winona Ryder – and The Plot Against America builds slowly, and smartly, to an overwhelmingly pertinent allegory about intolerant political policies. For my full review on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, visit the Fresh Air website. And for a full review here at TVWW, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.
