RAY HARRYHAUSEN 100TH BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE
TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET
Stop-animation pioneer Ray Harryhausen, who died in 2013, was born 100 years ago today, and TCM is noting the occasion by presenting five of his classic movies. The action, and the stop-action, begins at 8 p.m. ET, with 1958’s The 7thVoyage of Sinbad, which includes his human hero facing off against skeletons, Cyclops, snake women and others. At 10 p.m. ET, it’s 1956’s Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, which has extraterrestrial armed ships destroying state capitals and government buildings and monuments (pictured) with a fervor that Independence Day would emulate exactly 40 years later. Others in the tribute: 1961’s Mysterious Island at 11:30 p.m. ET, 1949’s Mighty Joe Young at 1:30 a.m. ET, and 1981’s late-career Clash of the Titans at 3:30 a.m. ET.
