DEPARTURE
September 17, 2020  | By David Bianculli

Peacock, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Actually, for Departure, it’s not really a premiere – not even an American premiere, because since America includes North America, and North America includes Canada (I hope I have all that right), Departure already has appeared on this continent. This series hails from Canada, and even though it’s new to us in the U.S., it’s also a bit familiar, at least in its high-concept subject. It stars Archie Panjabi and Christopher Plummer in a story about a Canadian passenger aircraft that vanishes in midflight, sparking a mystery, and a possible conspiracy, about whether the event is supernatural in nature, or has a more sensible yet sinister explanation. As for an explanation why I’m spending time talking about Departure, which is imported starting today by Peacock, how about this? I loved Panjabi in The Good Wife, and have been rooting for her to find a similarly meaty and successful role ever since. At least, with Departure, she got another chance to step up to the plate.
