EMMA
October 24, 2020  | By David Bianculli

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

Two different versions of Jane Austen’s Emma, that beloved romance novel and comedy of manners, were made the same year in 1996 – one for the movies, the other for British television. The TV version, starring Kate Beckinsale, was excellent. So was the big-screen version, in which the title character was portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow. And now, almost a quarter-century later, there’s another Emma with which to contend. This one stars Anya Taylor-Joy, who’s currently starring in Netflix’s brand new The Queen’s Gambit.
