THE BASTARD EXECUTIONER

SERIES PREMIERE: Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter’s new series begins like an ultraviolent fever dream – carnage and bloodlust on a 14-century Welsh battlefield.  Turns out it is a dream, and a vision, which a young man (played by Lee Jones) interprets as a new path to follow. That path takes him, eventually, to a medieval undercover job, assuming the identity of the court executioner in an oppressive occupying royal aggressor. Stephen Moyer, from True Blood, gets to use his native British accent for once - as does Matthew Rhys from The Americans. And Katey Sagal, Sutter’s wife and a Sons of Anarchy standout star, plays a mystical long-haired healer and visionary named Annora. Like other women in this story, she’s much more mysterious, inscrutable and interesting than the men – and it’s the women, I suspect, who eventually drive not only this series’ storyline, but its popularity. For a full review, see Ed Bark’s Uncle Barky’s Bytes.
