THE VOICE
March 9, 2016  | By David Bianculli

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s show is mostly a recap of the blind audition rounds to date, padded with additional footage – but because this has been such an enjoyable season for The Voice thus far, that doesn’t exclude it from being recommended. That’s especially true if you haven’t seen the show this month, in its newest incarnation, because the competition among the judges is quite strong this cycle. Last night, contestant Joe Maye sang a version of “I Put a Spell on You” that got both Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton to spin their chairs around – and just when it looked like Shelton was persuading Maye to join his team by saying Aguilera had never been a winning coach, she responded by telling Maye the song he performed was one of her favorites, and she’d love to sing it with him sometime. Fellow judge Pharrell, out of the running for this contestant but serving as a troublemaker called for a microphone so Aguilera could do it right then – which she did, putting a spell on Maye in the process. That sort of magic hasn’t happened yet this season on Idol, so if you haven’t been watching The Voice, here’s a chance to catch up.
