THE CONQUERER

TCM, 10:00 p.m. ET

This 1956 movie isn’t shown often on TV, but it’s one of those movies that’s lots of fun to watch, because it’s so woefully miscast and poorly written. Howard Hughes was the man behind this debacle, which chose, as its leading man in this biography of Genghis Khan, none other than… John Wayne. Khan you believe it? Not really. Not for a moment.

"The Conqueror" would be fun to watch...if you put at arms length the fact that a good deal of the cast and crew got cancer after the shoot. They shot the picture in the Nevada desert, close to atomic test sites. Plus, they trucked the radioactive sand back to Hollywood for re-takes. Few films have has such tragedy associated with it.
