When I teach Film Appreciation at Rowan University, one of the full-length silent movies I always show is this 1927 Buster Keaton film – which, I’m proud to report, holds the attention of today’s young college students quite thoroughly. Chalk it up to the humor, and the acting, and the Civil War setting, and the large-scale action sequences involving an old locomotive and a young train engineer – only one of which is called The General.
