MOVIE PREMIERE: John Lee, not Tim Burton, is directing this new Pee-wee Herman movie, in which Paul Reubens steps back into the white loafers of his eerily ageless character from the classic CBS children’s series, and from Burton’s equally classic 1985 film, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. This time around, the adventures and visuals aren’t quite so antic or inventive, but they’re pleasant enough – and there’s an oddly effective odd-couple feel to the screen buddy-movie pairing of Pee-wee and actor John Manganiello, who plays himself. When the actor met Pee-wee, the bow-tied imp had no idea who he was, having never seen any of his TV or film roles. That dialogue exchange made me laugh out loud: “True Blood?” Manganiello asks. Pee-wee shrugs. “You’ve heard of Magic Mike!” the actor insists, to which Pee-wee replies, deadpan, “You’d think so, but no…”
