MARY POPPINS
December 12, 2015  | By David Bianculli

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

Watch this 1964 Disney live-action movie, starring Julie Andrews as the umbrella-sporting heroine of the P.L. Travers story – then go find and watch 2013’s Saving Mr. Banks, in which Emma Thompson plays Travers, and Tom Hanks plays Walt Disney, who pursues her tenaciously for the rights to make Mary Poppins into a movie. Each film, the one from 1964 and the one from nearly 50 years later, informs and enriches the other.
