DANGER UXB
February 25, 2013  | By David Bianculli  | 2 comments

DANGER UXB – The UXB in the title of this 1979 British miniseries is military shorthand for “Unexploded Bomb,” and the story takes place in England in 1940, when the Germans are dropping bombs all over the countryside, and the cities, in a blitzkrieg aimed at demoralizing the citizenry at the start of what would become known as WWII.  Many of those bombs, though dropped, did not go off, which required members of UXB teams to locate and try to defuse them. Yes, it’s The Hurt Locker for a previous generation – and just as gripping, because, this being a miniseries, any character can die at any time, and several do. Anthony Andrews of Brideshead Revisited stars, with Judy Geeson as his love interest. Danger UXB premiered in the States on Masterpiece Theatre in 1981, but rarely has been televised since, though it holds up beautifully.  – DB
