Exclusive!: NBC's "Friday Night Lights" Returning for Sure
March 27, 2008  | By David Bianculli  | 2 comments

Friday-Night-Lights.jpg

Here's an exclusive I'm very pleased to report: NBC's Friday Night Lights will, indeed, be returning for a third season, according to series star Kyle Chandler.

I recorded an interview with Chandler yesterday for an upcoming edition of NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and Chandler confirmed that a deal to spread costs and continue the series had been struck. All that was left, he said Wednesday, was to "dot the i's and cross the t's." He was scheduled, and planning, to report back to Austin in June, he said, to start filming season three on location.

Thanks to Fresh Air executive producer Danny Miller for letting me share that breaking news in advance, making it the first official TV WORTH WATCHING exclusive. And thanks, Kyle, for a very intimate and honest interview. When it's got a scheduled air date (sometime in the first two weeks of April, most probably), I'll spread word.

The word that Friday Night Lights, one of TV's best dramas, will be back, though, was too good not to share.

This is a bit off the track, but when you speak of "one of TV's best dramas," I immediately think of "Studio 60"--which, going farther off the track, leads me to the piece you did on Aaron Sorkin's play. And though yours is not the drama blog, please advise this hinterland dweller of its condition/fate.
Thanks--whether you answer the question of not--for the nearly daily dose of insights and good writing (I've learned to live without the weekend blogs.) (Studio 60, sad to say, is long dead, and not coming back. Get the DVD of the first season, and you've got the whole ball of wax. Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you can live without the weekend blogs. I was having a tough time living WITH them. -- David B)

Sorry. I was asking about the play about Philo Farnsworth, which -- if my morning coffee finally has taken proper effect -- you wrote about shortly after it opened either on- or off-Broadway. (Sorry, I didn't follow your pronouns closely enough. "Farnsworth" is gone, too. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, twice. - David B)

Now if we can get NBC to spring for one last two-hour Las Vegas TV movie to wrap that series up.

A better idea - dump all reality programming.

Dear David....Thanks for this excellent and unexpected *News Flash*. Friday Night Lights was/is my favorite show...great cast...and Peter Berg was wise in his TV version of a really fine movie. This may take some of the sting out of having just watch Jericho bite the dust( a worthy blog topic....just for its dramatic story arc>>>cancelled...Nuts!.....renewed....canceled...>> I had anticipated its demise whilst watching the dreaded neilsens drop off for the show, I still felt it a loss for us in the anti-reality TV crowd) David...congrats on this website again...and nothing like an exclusive to boost your profile....Oh!...not to forget...looking forward to your future EXTRAS feature....missed it from my Daily News....Mark

I'm very pleased to read this news. I had read something about an agreement NBC made to share the costs of production, but I'm glad to know that it's really going to happen. Thanks for the news and I'll be looking forward to the interview on Fresh Air.

And take off the only things on NBC that are working in the ratings not named "Law and Order" and "Heroes?"

And where does it state that the only suitable prime time network programming is scripted? What is it you have against a variety of programming? Are you against variety shows, documentaries, music programs and game shows, too? Would you be against "What's My Line?" being on CBS on Sunday nights in the 50s and 60s? (Actually, I love certain reality shows -- Amazing Race, Survivor, Project Runway, even Apprentice -- just not the overwhelming, underwhelming majority of them. And how can I be against variety shows? WHAT variety shows? -- David B)

i am so happy to hear this. FNL is my favorite show on tv. it would be such a shame if it were to end. i love the storylines, characters, cinematography - everything - there's nothing i don't love about it. it's an excellent program. can't wait for the fresh air interview. thanks for posting this fantastic news, david.

I just started watching FNL. Watched both seasons a few weeks ago and I am hooked. However, how do you start a season 8 months ahead of where you left off?. Lyla last told Tim it was over and to move on. Now we start off with them together? We last saw Landry holding hands in school with Trya. Now we have to wonder if they can still be friends. Huh? Personally, I think skipping ahead 8 months is a mistake. But I am in the military and they produce TV shows. They probably know what they are doing. Joe

This is THE BEST show on t.v.!!! It's a family show with real issues that moves me every week!! It shows compassion, heartache, triumph, encouragement and possibilites for teenagers! I could not believe that it was even possibly up for cancellation! This is THE show that should replace ER in the Thursday line-up!

I absolutely love Connie Britton in the show. Coach Taylor and Tami are just the perfect couple. Their relationship, believe it or not has made my relationship with my husband better. We see the way that they comfort each other thru good times and bad. It really opened our eyes to how true love is supposed to be. And to think when the show first started, I didn't even wanna watch it. I thought, "Man! Football all day Sat & Sun, now I have to watch a show about it! But I'm so glad I did!
This show, by far is the most underrated show on television. Why we as fans have to continually go thru this, where they're gonna cancel, and then they're not. I have no clue, with the humongous following the show has, they would even have thoughts of cancelling this show. Well, one thing is for sure, we now we at the very least have 2 more years!!!...

Friday Night Lights Rocks!!!

OH, and by the way, there is a new website that has just been released. It's kinda like a MySpace website, but just devoted to Friday Night Lights Fans. It's pretty cool, you should check it out. My usernam on there is ShanO, come holla at me!

Kyle Martin Chandler, I just love him he's so cute. A great actor that has played so many roles. Unforgettable performances on Early Edition. Great stuff from a great man.

Thanks for taking the time to discuss that, I feel strongly about this and so really like getting to know more on this kind of field. Do you mind updating your blog post with additional insight? It should be really useful for all of us.

exquisite weblog! Do you have got any hints and suggestions for aspiring writers? I’m making plans to start my personal website quickly but I’m a bit lost on the whole thing. could you advocate starting with a unfastened platform like WordPress or cross for a paid option? there are so many alternatives accessible that I’m absolutely overwhelmed .. Any suggestions? Many thank you!
