...The Beatles went up to the roof to play. Yes, children, hard to believe, but it was that long ago (January 30, 1969) when they gave their final, albeit impromptu, performance in London. A bittersweet show only audible on the streets below from the rooftop of Apple Records – it was a last-minute substitute for a planned tour that never got off the ground. On this anniversary, Apple and Sir Peter Jackson, director of Lord of the Rings, have announced a new film in the works of the Let it Be sessions, which resulted in the rooftop concert, culled from 55 hours of never-before-seen footage. Jackson says, contrary to Beatles assumed history, the footage reveals the ongoing joy of the group playing together even though they were in the middle of changes and struggles that eventually broke them up. From the original Let It Be film itself, we've always agreed — and from this remastered video from that day, now on The Beatles YouTube website. —Eric Gould
