Johnny Carson and the Potato Chip Collection
May 13, 2012  | By Eric Gould

In Bianculli's Blog, David Bianculli reviews Johnny Carson: King of Late Night, the PBS American Masters profile of one of the greats of television talk. (It which premieres Monday, 9 p.m. ET.; Check local listings.) Having been on the air for over 30 years and 4,500 shows, Johnny Carson conducted thousands of interviews. His subjects ranged from celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor to Frank Sinatra to everyday people with extraordinary stories. On October 16, 1987, this included Myrtle Young, with her potato chip collection. Carson's improv moment may have been inadvertent, but it's priceless, and shows his instincts for unscripted moments. -EG
