You’d think, with the exponentially exploding number of viewing options available these days on cable, satellite, streaming sites and elsewhere, that I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch anything else. Yet I have, and I’m happy I did, because I’m found one of the purest and most addictive examples of reality TV I’ve ever seen. Courtesy of the Pennsylvania Game Commission, it’s a live feed of a camera overlooking an eagles’ nest in Hanover, PA. It’s been a fascinating thing to watch, whenever you tune in. During the snowstorm that pummeled the Northeast earlier this month, the nest looked like a giant snowball with an eagle on top – an eagle protecting her two eggs, which appeared in mid-February. According to the State Wildlife Management Agency, that puts the expected hatching date around March 21 – this coming Saturday. So tune in early and often, and watch nature in the raw, whatever happens. Astounding TV – especially considering that 30 years ago, only three eagles’ nests were known to exist in the entire state. Today, thanks to aggressive conservation and importation efforts, that number has grown to more than 250. – David Bianculli
