The White House press corps were the main story last Saturday night, with the WHCA annual dinner going on with the President not in attendance for the first time since the ‘80s and his own counter-programming rally held simultaneously in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Full Frontal host Samantha Bee jumped in as well, hosting her own Not the White House Correspondents Dinner. For the cold open, Allison Janney reprised her role as press secretary C.J. Cregg from The West Wing, but this time presiding over an obviously different group of alt-press reporters, bloggers and one conspiracy theory devotee. While confirming all the wrong-headed comic assumptions about host Bee, Cregg also gave a usual Sorkin-esque West Wing rant about the rights of the free press and of the, er, “reporters” there to have the same.
