Son of 'Boxing Cats'
September 2, 2013  | By Eric Gould

For Labor Day, Monday, September 2, TVWW recommends An Edison Album (1893-1912) airing on TCM, 8 p.m., ET. Edison thought there was little commercial value in motion pictures, and his invention of the Kinetoscope was meant as a boardwalk novelty, running minute-long clips of low-brow entertainment – like boxing cats. Sound familiar? 100 years later, Youtube is the 21st centrury electronic equivalent, with millions of viewers clicking on talking dogs, or in this case, a cat in a shark outfit riding a Roomba being chased by a duckling. (Clocking over 4 million hits). We sent this to TVWW editor David Bianculli overseas on a short trip recently and he wrote back, "And I thought Iceland was surreal." –EG
